Safe remote help

Remote help means I can see your screen, and with your OK, help fix things from my computer. It only uses tools made by Microsoft and Google, and you're in control the whole time.

Safety rules

Windows: Quick Assist

Quick Assist is built into Windows. No account needed on your side.

  1. Press Ctrl + Windows key + Q, or click Start, type Quick Assist, and open it.
  2. I'll read you a 6-digit code over the phone. Type it in the Code from assistant box and select Submit.
  3. Select Allow to share your screen.
  4. If I ask for full control and you're OK with it, select Allow. You can take it back anytime with Cancel control.
  5. When we're done, or anytime you want to stop, select Leave.

If Quick Assist isn't on your computer, Microsoft's page shows how to get it from the Microsoft Store: Microsoft Support: Quick Assist

Mac and other computers: Chrome Remote Desktop

Chrome Remote Desktop is free from Google and works on Mac, Windows, and Linux in the Chrome browser.

  1. Open Chrome and go to remotedesktop.google.com/support.
  2. Under Get Support, click Download and follow the steps to install it. On a Mac, it may ask you to allow it in your security settings.
  3. Click Generate Code and read the code to me over the phone. It only works once.
  4. A box will show my email address. Click Share only if it's me.
  5. To end the session anytime, click Stop Sharing.

Phones and tablets

For phones and tablets, just ask and I'll tell you the easiest way, which is often talking it through on a call.
